Roof Sheathing

The sheathing is now finished on the 2 story section except for the few boards along the ridge line that will need to be installed from the outside and a bit around some of the windows. The man in the bottom photo is my friend Steve Elfelt, who is visiting us with his family from Pennsylvania. Thank you, Steve!!!!

Typar and More Sheathing

Forrest helped me put house wrap on three sides today. It'll help keep the sheathing dry and protect me from the wind as well.

If you can picture a nice window here, you can get the idea of what the inside of the house will look like. Not a house for people who don't like wood!

Sheathing

This is as far as I got yesterday.
And this is what it looked like at the end of the day today.
The sheathing goes on the outside of the posts and it is visible from the inside.

The Deck is Down, the Rafters are Up

The deck as of Nov. 13. It is complete but for the missing boards between the posts.

The rafters are installed.

Temporary boards over the stair hole.

Yet another view.

Many, many thanks to Brendan Barden, Peter Flaherty and Dave Williams. They helped me get the last bit of decking done, move the rafters to the deck, and start getting them up.

Special thanks to Forrest Macgregor who spent many hours with me putting down the deck and raising the rest of the rafters.

Goalposts are Up

Putting together the first set of posts and beam.
First set is up. Starting to get wet.

Making progress.
Almost done.
Another view.
Looks like there's actually going to be a house here.

Many, many thanks to Jon, Matt and Rich, who worked with good humor on a cold and rainy day. I'm grateful for their help. Equal thanks to Forrest, who spend a long day with me making sure the sills were properly spaced and helping to build the beams.

Foundation and Plumbing

9/14/10 Footings are in. Forms for frost walls begun.
Pouring the frost walls.
Walls with the forms removed.
9/20/10 Starting to back fill. The machine in the center is a compactor, which I had the pleasure of spending several hours behind. A lot like using a lawn mower, but much heavier.
9/21/10 Sewer lines inside the house being installed.
All the pipes that will go under the slab are now in. In addition to the sewer lines there are also the cold water lines and some electrical conduit. Back fill inside the house almost done. We ran out of dirt!!

The Building Lot

The lot is on both sides of the road. On the left side of the photo the land slopes steeply down to a nice sized brook. The bush in the foreground marks one boundary (horizontally in this photo) and the far utility pole marks the other boundary (horizontally again). The car is in the same location in all these photos. You should be able to click on these photos to enlarge them in your browser if you wish to see more detail.

View of the lot towards the road from back of lot. You can see the string that outlines the house footprint if you look carefully.

The lot includes the trees in the foreground and goes back just beyond the line of tall, red pines in the background.

Small bush on right same as in first photo. Right side of photo is just about where the property line is. The house will fit in the sun-lit clearing.
View down to Ayers Brook, which borders the lot.
